Facilities
The Department of Geology is housed in the Rankin Science Complex, with several labs in the Chemistry-Astronomy-Physics (CAP) Building. Our facilities include
- Air quality monitoring and research facilities (APPALAIR)
- The F. Kenneth & Marjorie J. McKinney Geology Teaching Museum
- A comprehensive rock, mineral, and fossil repository
- The Fred Webb Jr. Outdoor Geology Laboratory
- The William C. and Ruth Ann Dewel Microscopy Facility (with a FEI Quanta 200 Environmental SEM)
- A UP266Macro laser-ablation ICP-OES lab (in the CAP Building)
- A computer modeling lab
- An optical microscopy laboratory with digital photography
- A RELION cathodoluminescense (CL) microscopy system (coming December 2009)
- An X-ray diffraction laboratory (with a Shimadzu 6000 XRD system)
- An undergraduate research laboratory, with state-of-the-art computing facilities
- A wide variety of field equipment
Additionally, students in introductory classes can get tutoring help from geology majors in the Answersphere.
