Ms. Melendez joined the Appalachian Geology Department August 2007. Prior to this, she was a graduate student and taught labs at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Her M.S. research applied traditional field and sedimentological techniques with current image-analysis procedures toward the analysis of a volcanic debris-avalanche deposit.  In 1792 a destructive earthquake triggered the collapse of the eastern flank of Mt. Mayuyama, a 4ka, isolated hornblende-dacite lava dome associated with Unzen volcano.  While this event is considered the worst volcanic disaster in Japan, the transport and emplacement mechanism of this event had not been well studied.  Her research suggested that the Mt. Mayuyama debris-avalanche deposit propagated as a laminar plug flow gliding over a thin layer where shear was concentrated.
