Dr. Liutkus is a sedimentologist and has worked in Olduvai Gorge in East Africa where she developed a facies model for semi-arid region wetlands by examining Pleistocene sediments exposed in the Gorge. Her Ph.D. dissertation investigated climate change and how sedimentary rocks (namely siliclastics and non-pedogenic carbonates) can record fluctuations in temperature and aridity. Dr. Liutkus joined the geology faculty in the Fall of 2005 and teaches Sedimentation and Stratigraphy in addition to the introductory courses. She currently is expanding her research interests to include sedimentation in the Triassic basins of North Carolina and Virginia and the Miocene Gray fossil site in eastern Tennessee.
