Originally from New England, Dr. Abbott has been at Appalachian State University since 1979. His current teaching assignments are listed
below. Dr. Abbott's research interests are in the fields of crystallography, optical mineralogy, igneous and metamorphic petrology.
He has traveled, studied geology, and/or taught in Nigeria, Italy, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and Nova Scotia. In 1995, he was a
Fulbright teaching fellow at the University of the West Indies, Jamaica. His current research involves blueschist-greenschist
metamorphic rocks in Jamaica and ultra high pressure (UHP) metamorphic rocks in the Dominican Republic. In the summers he offers a
five-week, short term study abroad program in Jamaica in collaboration with colleagues at the University of the West Indies. The program
has to do with geologic hazards in the Caribbean.
